Transport for Cape Town, the City of Cape Town’s transport authority, will spend approximately R4 million on the resurfacing of a section of Jip de Jager Drive in Bellville.
Road resurfacing project
The resurfacing project will commence on 20 June 2016 and is set to be completed by 5 July 2016, weather permitting and if all goes as planned.
‘We will spend approximately R4 million to resurface the section of Jip de Jager Drive between Eksteen and Kommissaris Streets in Bellville. Roads have a limited lifespan. Given the huge investment that is required for building new infrastructure, we undertake regular maintenance to prolong the longevity of the city’s road network. As such, the roadworks along Jip de Jager Drive involve the maintenance of the existing road base, resurfacing, and ancillary works to prevent further deterioration and potholes,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.
Lane closures
Residents and road users must please note that some of the lanes along this section of Jip de Jager Drive will be closed to traffic for the duration of the roadworks. However, one lane in each direction will be open to traffic at all times.
‘The closure of the lanes will enable us to expedite the roadworks so that motorists are inconvenienced for a shorter time. Even though the progress depends as much on the weather as on other unforeseen circumstances, we are confident that the works will be completed within three weeks,’ said Councillor Herron.
The closure of some of the lanes will affect traffic in both directions along Jip de Jager Drive, as well as on the adjoining roads in the area.
‘We apologise for the inconvenience. I request road users to please make provision for longer travelling times during the next three weeks and to be patient. Once completed, we will all benefit from the new smoother road surface and improved driving conditions,’ said Councillor Herron.
