City resurfacing Okavango Road in Durbanville

28 April 2016

Transport for Cape Town, the City of Cape Town’s transport authority, is spending approximately R2,7 million on the resurfacing of a section of Okavango Road in Durbanville.

The roadworks along Okavango Road commenced on Monday, 25 April 2016, and will be completed by mid-May, weather permitting.

‘Roads have a limited lifespan. Given the huge investment that is required for building new infrastructure, we undertake regular maintenance to prolong the longevity of the city’s road network. The roadworks along Okavango Road involve the maintenance of the existing road base, resurfacing, and ancillary works to prevent further deterioration and potholes,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.

The roadworks will be undertaken in two phases, and sections of Okavango Road will be closed to traffic as follows:
  • From Monday 25 April 2016 to Thursday 5 May 2016, between New Langeberg Road and Hennop Road
  • From Friday 6 May 2016 to Saturday 14 May 2016, between Hennop Road and Pinehurst Drive

‘The closure of the above-mentioned sections of Okavango Road will enable us to expedite the roadworks so that motorists are inconvenienced for a shorter time. Even though the progress depends as much on the weather as on other unforeseen circumstances, we are confident that the whole of Okavango Road will be open to traffic again on Monday 16 May 2016,’ said Councillor Herron.

The closure of these sections will affect traffic in both directions along Okavango Road, as well as on the adjoining roads in the area, such as New Langeberg Road, Hennop Road, Pinehurst Drive, Amadeus Drive and Brackenfell Boulevard.

‘We apologise for the inconvenience. I want to request that road users please make provision for longer travelling times during the next three weeks or so and to be patient. Once completed, we will all benefit from the new smoother road surface and improved driving conditions,’ said Councillor Herron.

'I am thankful that funding has been made available for the upgrade as this section of road has been a huge concern over the last five years,' said Cllr Gerhard Fourie, chairperson of Subcouncil 7.
