City reinstates janitorial services in informal settlements

2 November 2018

The City of Cape Town’s janitorial services for full-flush toilets in informal settlements are being reinstated. This service is offered seven days per week. Read more below:

The service was affected due to the unavailability of a service provider to inoculate janitors. Still, City depot staff have been performing janitorial duties as far as possible. Janitorial staff will now be receiving the required inoculation during November 2018 where after they will recommence their work.

The City employs janitors as part of the Expanded Public Works Programme. The janitors are contracted from within each informal settlement, thereby ensuring that local labour is used.

Prior to commencing their contracts, all janitors are required to be vaccinated against hepatitis. Unfortunately, as a result of an unforeseen supply-chain management related procurement issue, the City was unable to vaccinate any newly contracted janitors. As such, the janitorial programme was temporarily halted until such time as the City could ensure the health and safety of janitors. As stated above, City cleansing staff stepped in during this period.

The City is currently following a very specific inoculation protocol which lists the staff who need the inoculation and registers them in order of priority.

The first inoculations commenced with available stock on 22 October 2018 and the janitors in BM Section, Khayelitsha were the first to be inoculated. The remainder of the required inoculation stock has now arrived in Cape Town and the schedule for the inoculations has been finalised and is now in place.

It is envisioned that the janitorial cleaning service will commence during November 2018.

The City has informed the various candidates to avail themselves for the inoculations. We expect to inoculate approximately 820 workers. Once done, they will be able to sign the contracts and will be issued with the necessary tools to do the work.

The City assures members of the public that it is rolling out these inoculations as quickly as possible. We sincerely thank all residents who were affected by the temporary suspension of this service for their patience.

Once inoculated the janitors will be able to service the following settlements:
BM section 1-4; Enkanini 1-4; Masiphumulele; Emsindweni; K2; Imizamo Yethu; Phola Park; Masilunge; Siyahahlala; Siyanyansel; Freedom Park;  Monwood; DT; Zola Square; Monabisi; Silvertown 1-2; BT; QQ; CT; Chris Hani; PJS; TR; RR ; Blikkiesdorp; Kalkfontein; Joe Slovo; Malawi Camp; Shukushukama; LT-DT; Nomzamo; Dark City; France; Tsepe; Pholile; Nog ‘n Bietjie; Block 7; Never Never; Heinz Park; Block 8; Kosovo; Vygieskraal; Gugulethu; Philippi.
