City prohibits fires at Miller’s Point
21 December 2017
A newly reconstructed portion of the Miller’s Point recreation area, south of Simon’s Town, has been upgraded from the previous informal picnic and braai facilities.
However, the City of Cape Town has taken a decision to prohibit fires along this section of coast due to the increased fire risk in the area as a result of the ongoing drought.
‘Miller’s Point is a popular area for families to spend time together and wind down, especially over the festive season. While the upgrades will undoubtedly draw more visitors, we have had to minimise the risk of fires,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.
With the water shortages, it would not be responsible for the City to use potable water in the event of a runaway fire.
Transporting non-potable water to the area in the event of an emergency would take a significant amount of time.
‘The City’s Recreation and Parks Department urges the public to enjoy the facilities responsibly without the use of fires or the consumption of alcohol in the area,’ said Alderman Smith.
Picnicking at the Miller’s Point recreation area is permitted daily throughout the festive season. Law Enforcement will be on duty to monitor the area and enforce relevant by-laws.
