City partners with the South African Maritime School and Transport College to clean up Woodstock

31 March 2022

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate has partnered with the South African Maritime School and Transport College to facilitate weekly clean-ups by students in the Woodstock area.

The City would like to extend appreciation and recognition to the college for their efforts to keep their area looking tidy. Mayco Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg, Sub-council 16 Chair, Cllr Mathew Kempthorne and Ward 115 Cllr, Ian McMahon joined approximately 30 students picking up litter in the vicinity of Victoria Road and Searle Street on 30 March 2022, including the park below Nelson Mandela Boulevard, Woodstock.

The City assisted with planning focus areas, providing gloves and bags, and collection of the waste for disposal. The clean ups are also supported by the Woodstock Improvement District (WID).

Clean-ups are planned to continue every Wednesday morning for the month of April.

‘Although the City does provide area cleansing services throughout the city, litter is still a common problem in our communities.

‘Community-based clean-ups like this help set an example that we all have a part to play in keeping the environment clean and healthy, and reminds us that it is communities themselves who are negatively affected by littering and dumping,’ said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management.

Other community organisations that would like to partner with the City in similar ways can submit a request to wastewise@capetown.gov.za. Please note capacity is limited and organisations will be assisted on a first come first served basis.
