City opens Earth Week event at Blue Route Mall
22 April 2023
The City opened the Sustainable Trendsetters Build-a-thon, a competition to decide which school can create the best sculpture out of recyclable waste, at Blue Route Mall today, 22 April 2023.Each year during Earth Week society is encouraged to renew its commitment and efforts towards protecting and preserving our resources and the environment.
Redefine Properties, the managers of Blue Route Mall, and Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages are doing their part by raising awareness and motivating residents to rethink their relationship with waste, by hosting a competition in which nine schools compete to create the best sculpture out of recycled materials. The aim for the competitors was to create sculptures to depict something each school team is passionate about. The winning school will be awarded a grant of R20 000 courtesy of Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages. External judges selected by Blue Route Mall will judge the structures and announce the winning school by the end of April.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg, was invited to open the event today with a speech.
‘Coca Cola Peninsula Beverages and Redefine Properties must be commended for this effort to foster a more waste-conscious society. The City has also hosted a number of waste-to-art exhibitions over the years, in partnership with schools, as this is a very effective way to demonstrate that what we throw into landfills has value. It can even be turned into something really beautiful!

‘It is also encouraging to see a producer of waste play such a leading role in promoting recycling. With the promulgation of Extended Producer Responsibility regulations, those who create waste through their industry are now becoming key drivers of waste reduction, reuse of products and recycling. With business and government and our country’s youth all working together there is real hope for a cleaner and healthier environment in future,’ said Alderman Twigg.

Members of the public as well as family members and friends are encouraged to support this wonderful initiative and their favourite team. Sculptures will be on display until 2 May 2023 for shoppers to enjoy.
