City officials jump into the ocean to retrieve oil containers
5 November 2020
At around 08:00 this morning, Thursday 5 November 2020, the City’s Disaster Risk Management Call Centre was alerted by the Shell Garage owner at Three Anchor Bay in Sea Point that approximately 100 oil canisters/cans/bottles were dumped into the sea at Three Anchor Bay.Officials from the Coastal Management Department are still busy collecting and retrieving the containers from the bay. If all goes as planned, the clean-up should be done this afternoon.
‘We don’t know who is behind this act, or what their motive is, but we believe that they were dumped on purpose. We will use footage from CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the bay to see if we can identify those responsible,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.
The containers appear to be empty. There is also no evidence of an oil spill in the vicinity.
‘I want to commend our officials for their swift response, and commitment to retrieving the containers from the bay. They have collected a total of 113 plastic containers. These have been removed off site for appropriate disposal,’ said Alderman Nieuwoudt
