The City of Cape Town’s Kuyasa Park in Khayelitsha was reopened today after a 10-month closure which allowed for a R3,6 million upgrade.
A community consultation process was initiated in 2014 after reports from residents that the area was becoming a site for illegal dumping of rubbish, despite regular cleaning by the City.
‘Taking the community’s needs into account, the park was upgraded to include an outdoor gym, play equipment, soccer and netball areas, an amphitheatre, and a braai and family picnic area,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Anda Ntsodo.
The park was developed and upgraded using ward allocation funding and 28 job opportunities were created during the construction phase.
‘The City realises the importance of parks in terms of our environment and our communities. Parks are spaces for physical and recreational activity – they provide safe spaces to play and relax, while giving our children an opportunity to get fresh air and enjoy the outdoors,’ said Councillor Ntsodo.
Kuyasa Park is located in Khayelitsha and it is hoped that this park will become the heart of the surrounding community.
‘This park is for the community and we encourage young and old to visit and enjoy everything it has to offer. It’s an opportunity for each one to foster a sense of unity in a space created for their enjoyment,’ said Councillor Ntsodo.
