City of Cape Town’s Electricity Department receives SANAS accreditation
19 November 2015
SANAS is a body that accredits inspections, evaluations and calibrations of electrical meters. Our Electricity Measurement Office is now officially accredited as a calibration laboratory for electrical energy and has undergone the full process of certification. The accreditation by SANAS not only sets us apart as a national leader, but also demonstrates our contribution to and alignment with international best practices.
In addition, the SANAS accreditation process has an environmental compliance aspect. This ensures that our distribution and consumption of energy is in line with acceptable environmental standards.
The main function of the lab is to test all new meters that are to be installed, as well as to test old meters on request. The lab ensures that consumers are not overcharged or undercharged for their electricity consumption. This saves consumers money while at the same time it ensures that we generate the revenue that is due via the Electricity Department. This approach ensures that a basic service is distributed fairly and equitably to all residents. It also allows us to confidently monitor its electricity distribution network.
The accreditation of the lab is indicative not only of the state-of-the-art technology that is used in the lab, but also of the technical and managerial competency of its staff. Machines cannot test and calibrate the meters on their own. The employees also need to monitor the performance of the machines.
It is important that we recognise the contribution of the 59 staff members of the Electricity Department’s Measurement Office. The fact that we are now an accredited calibrator is not the end of the road. Currently, we are undertaking plans to secure accreditation as an on-site tester, whereby the testing of metering devices can be done on-site and not necessarily in the lab.
