In recognition of the grief experienced by loved ones, friends, and colleagues, the City of Cape Town would like to acknowledge, with a deep sense of appreciation, the services these staff members delivered to the residents of Cape Town.

‘As the City, we have experienced loss from within our family due to COVID-19 and our sympathies go out to the families, friends and colleagues of the staff members who have passed away. I wish to extend my gratitude to the staff performing essential work on the frontlines; without you, our city would not be able to provide services to our residents, especially during these challenging times,’ said Executive Mayor Dan Plato.

‘Looking ahead towards our road to recovery as the City of Cape Town, it is important to pause as we reflect on and commemorate the loss of 20 of our own employees who are sadly no longer with us due to COVID-19.

‘To the families and friends of these staff members, we offer our prayers that you will be blessed with strength and inner peace during this difficult time. Words alone cannot offer complete solace amid this sadness and deep sense of loss, but we hope that the knowledge that your loved ones will forever be remembered by their colleagues with compassion and affection, will offer some measure of comfort. Be assured, they live on in our hearts,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Sharon Cottle.

The City is appealing to all residents and visitors to Cape Town to please be vigilant and to keep on wearing face masks, to observe social distancing, wash hands often and to keep on avoiding crowds. The COVID-19 pandemic is still with us and all of us have to take the necessary precautions in curbing the spread of the virus and keeping ourselves and our loved ones safe.
