City Mayor Dan Plato takes pothole repair campaign to Monte Vista
18 November 2019
‘Going into communities and being involved with direct service delivery is something that is very important to me to show residents that we are focused on bringing services to them. This campaign is part of a back-to-basics approach to remind residents that we are committed to ensuring that more people experience the benefit of efficient service delivery,’ said Mayor Plato.
‘The formation of potholes during the colder months are a common occurrence as it is linked to the heavy rainfall, age and state of the roads. With warmer weather conditions on its way, city road repair teams are able to carry out repairs that are not quickly undone by more rain. They will also be carrying out general maintenance across the city to ensure that the roads that residents make use of everyday are in a suitable condition to drive and cycle on.’
The City’s Roads Department spent R38 million repairing 19 929 potholes during the last financial year (2018/19). Water is the main cause of potholes, but it can also form due to diesel spillage, vehicle collisions, fires, and inadequate road drainage. In addition to pothole-fixing, R287 million is spent each year on resurfacing roads.
‘The involvement of the Executive Mayor shows his commitment to service delivery for all residents. I would like to encourage members of the community to report potholes in their area so it can be attended to as soon as possible,’ said Ward 1 Councillor Cheryl Visser.
