City invests in young graduates
12 April 2019
A total of 21 participants who took part in the most recent SAP Skills for Africa programme received their SAP certification at a graduation ceremony which was held at City Council on Thursday 11 April 2019. Up to 10 of these talented graduates have also received two-year internship contracts within the City’s Information Systems and Technology Department.
This marks the City’s second intake of internships through the Skills for Africa Programme.
The Skills for Africa Class of 2019 recently graduated from various universities but are currently unemployed. By partnering with the SAP Training and Development Institute the City invested in these aspiring graduates by growing their ICT skillset and developing them as young sought after professionals.
‘I’m congratulating each graduate for completing the Skills for Africa Programme. The SAP certification will definitely open doors to new opportunities as these graduates are now equipped with critical and sought after skills which will set them apart in today’s very competitive job market,’ says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Sharon Cottle.
The City invested in the SAP Skills for Africa Programme to promote youth development in Cape Town and to grow ICT skills locally, particularly for SAP. All of the 10 graduates who have been appointed as interns will be working in the City’s ERP Support Centre.
‘Developing the youth of Cape Town is one of our top priorities and by awarding these internships we are helping these graduates to break into the job market and to make an official start to their career. We’re excited to have fresh talent on board and to see them flourish over the next two years,’ said Councillor Cottle.
In 2016 the City awarded 15 graduates with a two-year internship as ERP analysts in the City’s ERP Support Centre. Most of these graduates went on to becoming SAP consultants at leading corporates.
‘I want to add that two of the City’s senior staff members also completed the Skills for Africa Programme and did eventually secure permanent employment at the City. Muhammed Fakier is now a Senior ERP Analyst in the City’s ERP Centre and Ryno Meyer was recently appointed as a senior in the SAP Customer Relations Management team,’ said Councillor Cottle.
