City honours resident’s bravery
24 October 2016
At approximately 23:15 on the evening of 20 October 2016, the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Service received reports of a vehicle driving into oncoming traffic on the N1 outgoing in the Monte Vista area. Traffic Services immediately identified the vehicle, a white Jaguar, using the CCTV network and noticed that it was being followed by a white truck. First impressions were that both vehicles were driving negligently, however further examination revealed that the truck driver was attempting to stop the Jaguar, as well as warn oncoming traffic of the hazard by flashing his lights.
Despite numerous close calls, the driver was able to successfully prevent any injury and loss of life until the Jaguar could be apprehended, by no less than 14 officers, before the Koeberg interchange. The driver of the Jaguar was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless and negligent driving, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
"I commend Mr Small. It would have been easy for him to turn a blind eye, as many residents do after witnessing a crime, but his selfless actions almost certainly prevented a fatal crash." Alderman JP SmithCity Mayoral Committee Member: Safety and Security
