Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith, handed over 300 masks and 300 pairs of goggles to the organisation in Rylands – just hours before hundreds of wood fires were set to be lit to cook food for thousands of needy persons.

The annual tradition, now in its 34th year, happens at the end of the holy month of Ramadaan.

‘This is an example of how the community and the City of Cape Town are able to work together to help those in need. I have assisted in the annual Nakhlistan cook before, so I tip my hat to the volunteers who will be manning the pots this evening and ensuring that those less fortunate will be able to enjoy a hearty meal as part of Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations,’ said Alderman Smith.

More than 169 pots of aknie will be cooked on wood fires, comprising four tons of meat, 3,7 tons of rice, 3 tons of potatoes and 1,5 tons of onions.

‘The month of Ramadan is a period of deep reflection and spiritual renewal through prayer, charity and generosity and I would like to wish all Muslim residents Eid Mubarak as the month of Ramadan draws to a close. I am delighted and honoured to be a part of this wonderful tradition of giving,’ added Alderman Smith.
