​The Downs is located on five different sites in Manenberg and is an example of the City's commitment to providing qualifying beneficiaries with affordable housing on suitable land in and near urban centres.

'We celebrate with the latest beneficiaries and their families, and we are pleased to see them move into their brand new homes. This particular project is located on five sites, all of which are close to Govan Mbeki Road. This is a major transport route to Cape Town and the surrounding neighbourhoods in the southern suburbs.

'A total of 479 homes have been handed over thus far and another 108 homes will be handed over to beneficiaries in the coming weeks. The City thanks the project teams and contractors for their hard work and dedication in helping us provide homes to the beneficiaries, especially during this challenging time.

'The City is doing its level best to ensure beneficiaries receive their opportunities across the metro while ensuring staff and contractors are protected while on duty. We have enhanced security and increased monitoring at City housing projects so that we can deliver opportunities to the most vulnerable residents in the metro. We thank the community for their ongoing support and we will do what it takes to deliver affordable opportunities despite the challenges.

'We will continue to pursue our six-point plan to help reduce the incidents of violence, criminality, and extortion at our housing projects which is threatening some R1 billion in projects. Members of the public are urged to work with us and we are offering rewards of R5 000 for information leading to arrests of anyone targeting City housing projects with extortion and violence across the metro,' said Councillor Booi.
