City gives young people the edge on positive life choices

26 March 2019

The City's Community Services and Health Directorate launched a life skills training project for youth on yesterday on Monday 25 March 2019.

The project forms part of the Transversal Youth Development Programme.

It will give 80 young people across the metro (20 from each of the four geographical areas) an opportunity to participate in a two-day workshop that will equip participants with skills that will assist them to make informed life choices.

The participants were chosen from the EPWP Youth Work Readiness Programme.

The first group attended the launch session at the Thusong Centre in Mitchells Plain on Monday, ahead of their workshop next month, in the first week of April.

Key elements of the workshop will be:

  • Self-awareness
  • Team work, decision making and group dynamics
  • Communication and conflict management
  • Leadership
  • Sex, sexuality and safer sex practices

'The project is premised on the principle that personal victories precede public victories and focuses on the mastery of self. The ability to make informed decisions and life choices is a crucial skill as it can determine your path going forward, both in your personal life, but also in your career. This workshop initiative hopes to stimulate conversation and debate around these aspects and give our participants practical tools that they can use in their own lives, but also to guide and positively influence those around them too,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
