City gets on the board to host mass chess event in Mitchells Plain

1 April 2016

The annual Chess in the Park event takes place this Saturday at the Westridge Park in Mitchells Plain, and will once again draw hundreds of avid chess players and those interested in the game.

Chess in the Park is an integrated event put on by three City departments: City Parks; Sport, Recreation and Amenities; and Library and Information Services.

Chess, a game for young and old

‘The event is a firm favourite on the calendar and attracts both young and old. Chess is not always seen as a game for everyone and is often thought of as a sport for brainiacs, but it benefits all who play – and anyone can learn. Playing chess exercises both sides of the brain, it improves memory, creativity and concentration, and helps to develop problem-solving skills,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker.

Alderman Walker encouraged residents to join in the fun on Saturday, 2 April 2016.

‘Playing chess is a fun way of learning how to follow the rules and can help to build self-confidence. This event is also an opportunity for residents to visit the park and enjoy our facilities, while meeting other residents,’ said Alderman Walker.

Chess players, both novice and professional, can get registration forms from the Lentegeur Library or Civic Centre, the Westridge Civic Centre, the Rocklands Library or the City Parks office in Westridge.

The event is weather dependent and will not take place should it rain.
