The City of Cape Town’s various departments have ensured that the holiday programme for the summer break will keep children well occupied.
‘School holidays can be a time of boredom for learners and one of worry for parents. Our holiday programme caters for a broad range of tastes, for those who prefer being indoors or outdoors, with both physical and non-physical activities, from nature and music, to sport and art,’ said City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.
The Recreation and Parks Department has a diverse range of indoor and outdoor activities on offer at its centres including board games, dancing, five-a-side soccer and cricket.

In addition to the usual selection of books and audio-visual materials on offer at libraries, children can enjoy puppet shows, arts and crafts, and talent shows.
‘There is an exhaustive list of activities to keep young minds busy, ensuring that all ages are catered for. Our parks and nature reserves are also offering events to keep the young ones busy while they are getting fresh air. They are sure to be educated, fascinated and kept engaged.
‘The extensive list of programmes to ensure there is something for everyone is in line with the priorities of the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan to create an inclusive city. I want to encourage parents to send their children to these programmes to not only keep them busy, but also give them the opportunity to socialise and learn. They can have some good old-fashioned fun in a safe and inclusive space. Holidays can also be expensive and most of our programmes are free of charge,’ said Alderman Smith.
