City considering public comments on Rondebosch Golf Course lease renewal

13 March 2020

The City of Cape Town is considering public comments on the proposed renewal of the lease for the Rondebosch Golf Course

A total of 1940 persons have taken the opportunity to comment over the 30-day public participation period as per the Local Government Municipal Finance Act, and the associated Municipal Asset Transfer Regulations.

The City will give fair and proper consideration to each comment received. In terms of the process, the City’s Property Management branch will make a professional recommendation taking into account public comment.

This recommendation and public comments received will then serve at the relevant Sub-Council, Mayoral Committee and ultimately City Council for a final determination.

There is currently misleading information in the media that a decision has been taken to renew the Rondebosch Golf Course lease at the same monthly tariff.

This is incorrect. Determinations on tariffs for the new financial year will be released during the upcoming 2020/21 Budget process and related public participation. This includes tariffs for golf courses and other recreational facilities.

The City’s Recreation and Parks Department is further reviewing the land-use of all golf courses situated on City-owned land.
The current public participation dealt only with the proposal to renew the Rondebosch golf course’s lease for 10 years, based on a range of considerations including environmental limitations on alternative uses.

Public comments received on this proposal will now be considered and further details on the process will be communicated in due course.
