On Thursday, 7 April 2016 the Gang and Drug Task Team (GDTT) arrested a 32-year-old suspect with a .38 special revolver and four rounds of ammunition in Hanover Park.
The same team later arrested a 26-year-old for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition in Manenberg. Five other suspects were arrested in Manenberg on Thursday for possession of narcotics. Officers confiscated various quantities of dagga and mandrax.
That same day, the Law Enforcement Stabilisation Unit confiscated two firearms in Manenberg. During a patrol of the area, officers approached four men who started running away when they spotted the officers. One of them tossed a firearm into a yard while fleeing, but officers caught up with him and also found the firearm which had been reported stolen in Khayelitsha.
In the second incident, officers searched a suspect and found him in possession of a Glock pistol. The firearm had been reported stolen in Kraaifontein.
‘All of these firearms will be sent for ballistics tests to determine if they have been used in any crimes. Hopefully these tests will help build solid cases against the suspects arrested. There are far too many illegal firearms on our streets. While I commend our officers for their sterling work, I worry that the four firearms taken off the streets are simply being replaced by others brought into circulation.
'Cracking the weapons supply chain should be a critical part of policing efforts to quell gang violence. Once we roll out Shot Spotter in Manenberg and Hanover Park, we will see a further increase in the number of firearms confiscated,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
