City condemns vandalism of water supply infrastructure in Pinelands

22 February 2016

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation department is repairing the last of eight water mains, following vandalism of infrastructure in the Pinelands area. Crews worked throughout the night to repair seven burst water mains in the area, and are currently working on the eighth burst main.

There are two water feeds into Pinelands, both supplied through pressure reducing valves. The bursts all happened within an hour of one of the pressure reducing valves being vandalised at about 21:00 on Friday, 19 February 2016.

Teams had to shut down the other pressure reducing valve and manually regulate water pressure through the night, thus affecting the water supply to the area. The damages are being repaired, after which the two pressure reducing valves will be opened and reset.

Four repair crews worked extremely hard to have most of the repairs completed by the time residents in the area woke up on Saturday morning, particularly for the Howard Centre complex.

The City condemns the vandalism and calls on residents with any information to come forward. The selfish actions of a few criminals have had a negative effect on an entire suburb. The resources that went into repairs could have been much better spent on maintenance or new infrastructure.

The City appeals to residents to keep an eye out for any suspected criminal activity in their area and to report it to Law Enforcement on 021 596 1999.
