'The City's Road Infrastructure Management department has started with the repair work to four bridges along Baden Powell Drive in order to create a safe passage for road users. These bridges located between New Strandfontein Road and Weltevreden Drive will be made safer and more aesthetically pleasing to the public. Work will take place from Monday to Friday between 07:30 to 17:00 and on Saturdays from 07:30 to 14:00,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
Motorists should note that the replacement of the bridge joints will require a stop/go system as one lane would need to be closed. This aspect of the work, however, only takes approximately five days so lane closures will not be required for the full contract duration.
The rehabilitation work on the bridges will include:
• Replacement of bridge joint systems
• Repair of damaged deteriorated balustrades and installation of precast concrete top rails
• Repair to concrete defects, such as cracks
• Cleaning and applying a protective coating to exposed concrete elements
This project forms part of the City's regular road maintenance programme.
