City commences with footway and traffic-calming roadworks in the Blaauwberg district

30 October 2026

Footway, traffic calming works under way in three suburbs

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate advises the public of footway and traffic-calming works which will be under way at various locations in Montague Gardens; Parklands and Sunningdale over the next month. The project forms part of the City’s efforts to improve pedestrian safety, accessibility, and non-motorised transport (NMT) facilities to create safer and calmer streets. The work should be completed by mid-December should all go according to plan.

The footways will provide a dedicated and safer space for pedestrians and improve NMT accessibility in these areas.

Construction commenced today, 30 October 2026 and will take place between 08:00 and 16:00 on weekdays and 07:00 and 15:00 on Saturdays.

The works will include the construction of selected asphalt footways and the traffic-calming measures include raised pedestrian crossings. The affected locations are as follows:

  • Railway Road, Montague Gardens
Traffic-calming measures will be implemented along Railway Road, which includes a raised pedestrian crossing and a new sidewalk.
  • Link Road, Montague Gardens
A new sidewalk will be constructed along Link Road.
  • Leadville Way, Sunningdale
A raised pedestrian crossing will be constructed along Leadville Way as part of the traffic-calming measures at the primary school.
  • Raats Drive, Parklands
A new sidewalk will be constructed along Raats Drive, between Wood Drive and Gie Road. The route experiences significant pedestrian activity. Residents are to note that the construction will cross multiple private driveways. The City thanks you for your patience and understanding.

The construction will generally be undertaken in half-width sections, and the inbound and outbound lanes will not be worked on simultaneously. No full road closures are planned as part of the project.

‘Residents and road users are advised that temporary construction activities, signage and traffic-management measures will be in place while the work is under way. We thank you for your patience and understanding while our teams complete this important work ahead of the builder’s break. We ask that residents remain vigilant and cautious around construction areas especially where the new footways cross private driveways,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
