City celebrating Mandela Day with a week of volunteerism

Staff from the Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate will paint the fence and equipment of the Child Minors crèche in Khayelitsha. The Mayoral Committee Member for Social Development and Early Childhood Development, Councillor Suzette Little, will join them at 14:15. The crèche is in Bekelentloko Street.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, will help to paint the Nomonde Educare facility in Langa from 8:00 to 12:00. Nomonde Educare is in Zone 23, nr 34, Langa.

Environmental Management Department staff from Maitland and Westlake will visit the Grassy Park SPCA to help build a tortoise enclosure, starting from 10:00.

Bracken Nature Reserve staff will be greening an area of the Hector Peterson High School in Kraaifontein, starting at 09:00.

Helderberg Nature Reserve staff will be greening a portion of the Helderberg Hospice in Somerset West. 

Staff from the City’s Human Settlements Directorate will assist with the general clean up and greening of the Athlone and Tygerberg Cancer Association of South Africa facilities.

City Parks’ staff will do general gardening at the St George’s Home for Girls at 5 Bute Road, Wynberg. Some of the activities include the mowing of grass, establishing a vegetable garden and the cleaning of flowerbeds.

Staff from the City’s Parks Department will do a general clean up, litter picking and tree planting at Kuyasa Park in Khayelitsha from 10:00.

Staff from the City Parks northern district will spend time at the Sonstraal Old Age Home in Grosvenor Street in Atlantis from 10:00. The home is a former police station building which has been converted into an old age home.

Mayoral Committee Member for Social Development and Early Childhood Development, Councillor Suzette Little, will donate a customised wheelchair to Khayelitsha resident Nokhaya Nkompela at 10:30. The handover will take place at nr 6150 Nxala Street, Kuyasa, Khayelitsha

Friday, 22 July 2016 
Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve staff will host learners for their annual Mandela Day event. Learners will be exposed to the magnificent dunes of the nature reserve and taught about conservation. This is in partnership with the organisation ADORE.
