On Thursday, 14 April 2016 members of the City’s Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Sports, Recreation and Amenities departments presented an educational session on water safety in partnership with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the Western Cape Aquatics Club at Beverley Park Primary School in Eerste River.
Learners were provided with water safety tips including information on hazards associated with rivers, canals and beaches where they often play. Every year, a number of lives are lost needlessly and the information session aims to equip learners with the knowledge to stay out of harm’s way.
Mrs Eudia Erasmus gave a presentation on safety in the water and was supported by Christopher Van Niekerk (Western Cape Aquatics) and Raafiq Manchest (Sports and Recreation). The issue of flooding risk was discussed by Franquin Petersen of DRM.
“Lives should not be lost due to lack of knowledge about safety in the water. By educating learners about the risks and safe practices while in the water we can reduce the risk of drowning or injury. Our aim is to carry this message to all areas within the City to improve safety for all residents,” said Petersen.
