City advises road users of lane closures at Strand and Adderley Street intersection

14 March 2016

The City of Cape Town would like to advise road users that remedial work will take place at the Strand and Adderley Street intersection. Temporary lane closures will be in effect from Tuesday, 15 March 2016 for a period of approximately three weeks.

The remedial work forms part of the refurbishment of the intersection to the value of approximately R24 million.

‘Part of the resurfacing that was done last year will be removed and redone as we are not entirely satisfied with the quality of the work. We therefore require, in terms of the contract, that the contractor redo some of the resurfacing,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.

Parts of the road surface will be removed on Tuesday, 15 March 2016 and Wednesday 16, March 2016 and replaced with a new layer of asphalt in the following week, weather permitting.

Once completed, the quality of the road surface will be significantly improved. In addition, future maintenance of this intersection will not be required for at least another 12 years.

Temporary lane closures will be in effect for a period of approximately three weeks, if all goes according to plan.

‘We will do everything possible to limit the inconvenience to road users, but commuters must please try to avoid this area and find alternative routes into and from the central business district. Those road users who cannot avoid this intersection must expect significant traffic congestion and delays,’ said Councilor Herron.

Residents should please contact the Transport Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63 for more information about the lane closures.
