City advises of lower water pressure in Somerset West and surrounding areas

6 September 2021

The City’s Water and Sanitation Department will temporarily shut down the Steenbras 840mm water pipeline between Somerset West and Strand, from Friday, 10 September 2021 at 18:00 until Sunday, 12 September 2021 at 18:00.  This 48-hour shut-down will allow for the replacement of the 840mm inline valve on Old Main Road, near the Somerset West Golf Club, and may cause reduced water pressure and minimal water supply disruptions to Somerset West and surrounding areas.

As part of pro-active maintenance on the bulk water infrastructure to ensure continued water supply to residents, the 840mm valve on Main Road, Somerset West will be replaced as it has shown signs of wear and tear due ageing.

Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work. To minimise the impact of the shutdown on residents, water will be diverted from Blackheath and Helderberg Water Treatment Plants as well as other pipelines to support the reservoirs in the Somerset West and greater Helderberg area. Technical teams have already started with the changes to the network to allow enough time for the system to stabilise well ahead of the shutdown. Residents will have access to the water supply but may experience reduced water pressure due to this diversion.

Although no significant water supply disruptions are anticipated from this work, residents in the Somerset West area are encouraged to use water sparingly over this period to reduce pressure on the system while works are under way. Reducing water consumption will help reduce the impact on communities.

The City regrets any inconvenience caused, however, this operation will ensure future continuity of water supply to residents throughout the city.
