For many years, the Amitofo Care Centre (ACC), a charity organisation based in Taiwan, has distributed durable medical equipment, medicines and clothing to people in need across Africa.
The City of Cape Town has been a recipient of this generous donation for the last five years. Through the partnership with the ACC, the City has been able to donate the following items to residents across the city:
• 494 wheelchairs
• 219 sets of crutches
• 142 walkers
• 187 commodes
The City of Cape Town’s Speaker, Alderman Dirk Smit, enjoys a good working relationship with the Cape Town Taipei Liaison Office which facilitates the receipt of the containers housing much-needed durable medical equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, walkers and commodes.

‘I would like to thank the Cape Town Taipei Liaison Office for their generous donation every year. The durable medical equipment donated will once again go a long way towards bringing comfort to a number of our most vulnerable residents. This donation of much-needed mobility equipment and other items of comfort helps us to deliver on our promise of promoting individual and community welfare. The wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches help to provide residents who have special mobility needs with a sense of pride and independence as they are able to move around on their own,’ said Alderman Smit.
The City’s Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille, attended the handover along with Alderman Smit.
‘The City has enjoyed this partnership and generosity from the Taipei Liaison Office for a number of years and, because of their help, we have been able to donate these items to hundreds of vulnerable residents who did not have access to these aids because of the long waiting list at State hospitals. We are truly grateful for these donations as they help us in our work to build a caring city which looks after the elderly and disabled,’ said Mayor De Lille.

Achievements thus far include the establishment of orphanages in Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho and Zimbabwe that have adopted 3 000 orphans to date. The achievements have been made possible by the joint effort of Ven Huei Li and the financial support of numerous people from Asia.
