CHALLENGECAPETOWN brings first middle distance triathlon to Cape Town

7 November 2019

Cape Town will join more than 20 other cities across the globe to host triathlons under the CHALLENGEFAMILY banner when the inaugural CHALLENGECAPETOWN event kicks off on Sunday 10 November 2019.

It is the first Challenge event on African soil, and some of the world’s top triathletes will join recreational athletes in navigating a 1,9km swim in Big Bay, a 90km cycle to the Central Business District and a 21km run in the Zonnebloem and District 6 Precinct.

‘This is yet another feather in Cape Town’s cap, and an exciting addition to our growing list of world-class events. The event organisers, with the help of City staff, have drafted a flat, fast and an unrivalled scenic cycle route that will show local and international athletes Cape Town as they have never seen it before. The route that participants will run shows off the more historic part of the city, and provides a backdrop unlike any other.

‘The City also welcomes the economic benefits that inevitably flow from events like these, as well as the skills transfer for residents involved in the behind-the-scenes execution of the event; just a few of the reasons why we sponsor events like these,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Residents and motorists are alerted to temporary road closures for the event.
