As the curtain falls on the 2021 SPAR Challenge, Cape Town has shown once again that it is an ideal events host.In another triumph ahead of the 2023 Netball World Cup, Cape Town has successfully hosted another major continental Netball series.
The 2021 SPAR Netball Challenge concluded last night at the Cape Town International Convention Centre where the South African Netball team, the Proteas, was crowned the TRI-Nations champions.
The seven-day event featured tough competition between the Proteas, the Uganda She Cranes and the Namibia Desert Jewels. South Africa’s under-21 team also did battle with an invitational President’s 12.
‘On behalf of the City of Cape Town, I would like to congratulate the Proteas on winning the tournament as well as Netball South Africa for hosting a series that provided these teams with a safe space to prepare for the major stage. I also want to thank the CTICC for providing a world-class facility to safely host this event,’ said Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.
The success of the Spar Challenge follows the 2019 Africa Netball Cup and the three-match series with the England Roses, which was also hosted here in the Mother City in November 2019.
Its conclusion brings the timetable closer to the Netball World Cup to be hosted in Cape Town – the first ever on the African continent.
‘Our expertise in hosting seamless world-class events was again on show over the last seven days. This was part of a broader process for preparing for the World Cup. It is a huge challenge and there’s still a great deal to be done. We want to put together a uniquely Cape Town, South African event and it is time for Africa to take the centre stage in netball,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
