The City’s strategic business partner and destination marketing and tourism agency Cape Town Tourism has launched their domestic campaign to highlight affordability and reignite domestic tourism to the city during the winter season, and in an innovative way.

Friday, signalled the start mid-year school holiday season and we are very excited to share the amazing experiences on offer for Cape Town’s winter campaign.

The campaign includes a viral video and a digital e-book with great winter deals, and low-cost flights in partnership with Mango Airlines. Booking of low-cost fares runs from May to August 2019, with the travel window closing at the end of October 2019.

Innovative ideas such as these, showcase the local offering while creating new opportunities for the residents. My focus is to ensure that Cape Town is a must-see destination on traveller’s bucket lists.

It is also an ideal time to try out #pocketfriendlycapetown, where you can experience 50 things to do in Cape Town for under R50. The city is brimming with affordable things to do and the details can be downloaded here: https://www.capetown.travel/50-things-to-do-for-under-r50-in-cape-town/. The under R50 experience makes Cape Town’s offerings affordable for locals as well as international visitors who are on a budget.

Although many may think winter is not an ideal time to travel, you can get these experiences for half the price with half the hassle.

Earlier this year, we announced that we will be working in collaboration with the Cable Mountain Cableway to ensure Table Mountain becomes more accessible to more South Africans and to enrich the experience for visitors and locals. Cableway already offers year-round deals tailored to locals including the 3-for-1 Kidz Season launching today (26 April 2019 until 30 September 2019), the half-price Sunset Special, Birthday Special, Pensioner Special and the Student Special, as well as a year-round access Cable Card. While the Class in the Clouds Programme, where pupils pay R45 to experience the cable car ride and to learn about the fauna and flora on top of the mountain, has hosted over 250 000 learners since its inception in 2001.

Through the revised Tourism Development Framework (TDF), which takes a new immersive approach to cultural tourism, we are expanding on our tourism landscape with the core focus of creating more community-based offerings.

Championing the implementation of this strategy that will boost cultural experiences and help diversify tourism products that will lead to more community involvement and economic benefits is a priority for my directorate.

I also want to wish you all well over the holiday season, safe travels and enjoy all that Cape Town has to offer.
