The National under-19 Netball Championship comes just months after Cape Town was announced as the host city for the Netball World Cup in 2023 after a successful inter-governmental bid.
 
The u19 tournament features 37 teams and hundreds of players from across the country, all vying for the national title.  
 
The tournament will also provide an opportunity for the 120 officials, including junior umpires with a lower grading, to showcase their abilities and improve their grading levels.

As part of the development goals, the tournament will also have a coaching clinic with 65 players and 25 coaches from across Cape Town this week.
 
This will assist the coaches towards achieving national netball coaching accreditation.
 
‘When we bid for the Netball World Cup, we made it clear in our presentation that developing the sport and providing opportunities for aspiring players were some of our priorities. This is just the start of that process and we are hoping that through our partnership with the national and provincial governments, as well as Netball SA, we continue providing platforms for junior netball players, officials and coaches,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith. 
 
      

The u19 tournament also provides Cape Town, the netball fraternity, and government the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities in hosting netball events in the run up to the Netball World Cup.
