Cafda lane closures aim to reduce crime

10 February 2016

The lanes running between the houses along Walton Road in Cafda, Retreat, have long been a cause of grave concern to residents in the area. Due to ongoing gang-related activities, the lanes have become a high security risk as they are used by gang members as an access and escape route when engaging in gang fights with rivals or committing other crimes.

After receiving complaints from residents who feared for their lives, Cllr Clive Van Der Merwe took up the matter with the City’s Human Settlements department. After an assessment had been done, it was decided to close off the lanes using vibracrete fencing. Work on the lane closures was started in November 2015 and have now been completed with funding provided by the Human Settlements department.

Cllr Van Der Merwe thanked Human Settlements official, Ronnie Du Plessis, for supporting this important community safety initiative.
