Bingo’s birthday ‘trash’ celebration

9 October 2026

The City of Cape Town’s much-loved anti-litter mascot, Bingo, celebrated a third birthday by doing what Bingo does best: encouraging young residents to take pride in their surroundings and keep Cape Town clean.

In an event combining environmental action with birthday fun, Bingo was joined by City staff and various friends including Onke the Otter (from the City’s Environmental Management department) and Themba the Penguin (from Cape Town Tourism), for a birthday clean-up at Muizenberg Beach on Thursday, 1 October 2026.

Braving very windy conditions, participants at the clean-up collected 11 bags of litter from the beach, weighing approximately 97 kilograms.

Since being introduced three years ago, Bingo has participated in approximately 1 880 appearances, events and community engagements. Through these engagements, Bingo helps the City introduce children to responsible waste disposal and the importance of keeping shared spaces clean.

Bingo received the best birthday present. Lots of friends came to Bingo’s birthday clean up to help inspire the community to help protect their environment. This is an important reminder that caring for Cape Town is something all of us can take part in. Every piece of litter that is picked up, and every piece that is placed in the bin correctly, helps to protect our neighbourhoods, rivers and the ocean.

Children can be powerful champions for cleaner communities. Bingo makes these lessons memorable, while encouraging learners to share what they have learned with their families and friends. We thank the learners and educators who participated for helping to make Bingo’s third birthday meaningful. The best birthday gift is for residents to follow Bingo’s example, not only during clean-ups, but every day. Keeping Cape Town clean is a shared responsibility.
