900+ arrests put a different spin on Janu ‘worry’
22 January 2024
The brazenness of criminals is nothing new, but to perpetrate a crime in full view of CCTV cameras takes some doing, unless of course they were unaware, in which case, they now have time behind bars to rethink their decisions.
In one of the most recent incidents, a CCTV operator had a front row seat to a break-in at a business premises in Bellville at approximately 02:30 this morning.
Enforcement services were activated, and three suspects were arrested.
'The brazenness of criminals is nothing new, but to perpetrate a crime in full view of CCTV cameras takes some doing, unless of course they were unaware, in which case, they now have time behind bars to rethink their decisions. We speak regularly about the enforcement successes, and the number of arrests made, which is a feather in our staff's cap. But for those 900 plus individuals who have been taken into custody this month, the potential consequences should be of concern. I don't think anyone's new year's resolution is to get caught for a criminal offence and spend time behind bars, but that's where you'll end up if our staff catch you falling foul of the law,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

The 31-year-old was apprehended shortly after, and found with a .38 special revolver, without a serial number, and nine rounds of ammunition.
On the same day in Steenberg, Metro Police officers arrested a 20-year-old suspect for the possession of 76 bankies of dagga, nearly 50 mandrax tablets and three bottles of cough syrup, for which he could not produce proof of a prescription.

On the roads, Traffic Officers recorded 60 161 transgressions, impounded 141 vehicles and executed 640 warrants of arrest.

During the past week, the City's Law Enforcement officers conducted 540 enforcement operations, during which officers arrested 177 suspects and issued more than 4 330 fines.
