Long-term planning is critical to ensure economic growth, enhance infrastructure efficiency, and ensure that the City continues to meet the evolving needs of both current and future generations.

Our Integrated Development Plan (IDP) is the guiding strategic plan for each five-year term of office, and is the most important of our many strategic planning instruments.

However, in order to overcome current challenges, anticipate and plan for potential future challenges, and achieve our 2050 vision for Cape Town, our plans need to inform and transcend five-year terms of office.

The Cape Town 2050 Long-term Plan aims to:​

• inform all City strategies, plans and frameworks going forward, including the MSDF
• provide a structured and forward-thinking framework for the city’s growth, development, and sustainability over an extended period (i.e. the next 25 years)

Our vision for Cape Town 2050 ultimately seeks to:

• create a city of opportunities for all, and
• create a city that is future-fit and ready for the challenges and opportunities of the next 25 years.

There are seven pathways to achieving these two goals:

• Access to opportunities through economic growth
• Access to opportunities through increased safety and security
• Access to opportunities through an efficient urban form and housing opportunities at all levels
• Infrastructure planning for the future
• Utilities for the future
• A climate-resilient, biodiverse city
• A fiscally healthy, future-fit city
