Home Composting Programme
About the programme
We provide free home composting containers to help you deal with your organic household waste and create a good compost system. Good compost feeds nutrients back into soil, retaining moisture and can help you to grow your own food and establish a healthy garden.
How do I qualify?
You can apply for your free home composting container when our home composting roll-out comes to a location close to you.
To qualify for a free home composting container:
- You need to be a homeowner or tenant of a single residence (sectional title flats are excluded).
- Your property needs to include a secure garden or yard area.
Please note
To generate healthy compost, your secure garden or yard should ideally include a minimum of 1 m² of open soil (where you’ll place the container) and a minimum of 30 m² covered by vegetation.
How do I apply?
Visit one of the collection points listed below to complete an application form. Application forms will only be available at the venues during the specified dates and times.
If your property qualifies, you can collect your home composting container on the day you apply.

Composting at home
We encourage everyone to start composting at home, which can be done without a home composting container if necessary; if you are already composting, please continue the good work.
If you are not sure where to start, or you want more information about composting at home, visit our Start composting at home page.
Remember
Use your household organic waste, including: fruit and vegetable waste, egg shells, tea bags and, garden waste like grass and leaves for a good compost and a healthy garden.
