We love our Muizenberg beach huts We love our Muizenberg beach huts
The refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront commenced last week. The City of Cape Town wants to confirm that the eight iconic beach huts on the beachfront will be replaced with eight new huts that match the existing huts like-for-like. We are absolutely committed to preserve the current look and feel of Muizenberg, and will ensure the new huts match the historic design, colours and pattern of those currently located next to the Waves for Change and Shark Spotters buildings. Same as our residents, the City loves these huts and acknowledges their significant heritage value. The huts are definitely included in the new layout of the public amenities on the beachfront.

The refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront entails major upgrades to public amenities and replacing the aged seawalls. The project is being implemented in phases over a two-year period. The first phase commenced last week on the western side of Surfer’s Corner, next to the railway line.

The upgrades to the public amenities are still months away. However, it came to the City’s attention that there is misinformation on social media platforms about the future of the huts.

The facts about the iconic beach huts:

The eight existing huts will be replaced with eight new huts that match the historic design, colours and pattern

The existing huts need to be removed from their current location as the new upgraded promenade will be further inland – the setback is approximately 2m. The setback is needed in response to the impact of climate change, including rising sea levels and storm surges and also to ensure the new seawall does not reduce the width of the beach

Simply moving the existing huts is not feasible as they need to be dismantled, stored, and reconstructed and are likely to be damaged during this process

As such, the City recommended to rather replace the existing huts with like-for-like huts; and this proposal was accepted at the time of the public consultation process

The new huts will be located at the central plaza where they will also serve as a wind shelter for the central shower area

The City wants to reiterate: where existing buildings are refurbished or demolished, these will be rebuilt in a style similar to the existing buildings to ensure we retain the heritage value, look and feel of Muizenberg

Community meeting
The first community liaison meeting for the Muizenberg Beachfront Refurbishment Project is taking place next week.

• Date: Tuesday, 25 February 2025
• Time: 17:30 to 19:00
• Venue: The Lookout, Promenade Road, Zandvlei, Muizenberg

‘I encourage the local residents and business owners in particular, to attend our first community meeting about the beachfront upgrade. This is the ideal opportunity to stay updated with the latest news and where concerns can be raised and addressed. We will host regular community meetings as the project progresses and all are welcome to attend. I also want to thank the public for the support and understanding while the work is ongoing; we are well aware of the inconvenience caused, and want to assure you that we are doing our best to limit the impact on visitors and the local residents,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

Stay informed
• Look out for the two big information boards in the vicinity of the beachfront
• Smaller public information displays are at various points at the beachfront; these include artist impressions of the refurbishment and design
• Scan the QR code to sign up for updates, and more information about the project
• Sign up by using the following link: https://forms.office.com/r/8rARD9z8SM
• Send an email to muizenberg@chand.co.za

Captions: Artist impressions of the Muizenberg beachfront upgrade project, which commenced last week.
