Traffic transgressions top number of fines issued

The City's enforcement departments arrested 51 people over the past few days, including seven for drunk driving, five for reckless driving and one for domestic violence. In addition, more than 57 000 fines were issued.

'The most fines issued remains for traffic violations, which make up for more than 54 000 of the total. An increase in traffic has meant an increase in related offences and within a 24-hour period, from Saturday to Sunday evening, 52 vehicle accidents were recorded. Drunk driving arrests are slowly climbing upwards, while reports of assault also show an increase,' said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

The Traffic Service alone arrested 40 people, impounded 138 vehicles, 129 cell phones and issued 54 196 fines.
It includes three arrests and 167 fines issued during an illegal street racing operation held in the Bellville and Century City areas. During the operation, one driver was arrested for having a fraudulent motor vehicle license and number plates.
The Metro Police and Law Enforcement departments continue with high visibility patrols and assist with land invasion operations at hotspots around the city.
'There are hotspots from north to south and officers are called on to respond 24 hours a day. The onslaught on public land is relentless and impacts services and resources.
 
‘In addition, officers assist during protest action, conduct autonomous and joint operations, while responding to emergency calls from the public. As more sections of our economy reopen and our lives get back to a semblance of what it was, let breaking the law not become part of that normal,’ added Alderman Smith.
