Traffic officers clip suspects’ wings

Officers made seven arrests in fewer than 48 hours, and recovered a number of stolen items. Some of the suspects are also linked to cases elsewhere in the country. Read more below:

Traffic officers arrested two robbery suspects in Athlone this morning. Three suspects robbed a pedestrian along Jakes Gerwel Drive and fled in the direction of Bridgetown. Officers gave chase and caught two of them – the third got away. The victim arrived at Athlone SAPS where she identified her belongings as well as the suspects who were charged with robbery, possession of stolen property and possession of a dangerous weapon.<figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/Athlone%20robbery.jpeg" alt="" /></figure> On Tuesday, 7 January, traffic officers on patrol in Muizenberg received information of a remote jamming/theft out of motor vehicle incident that had occurred in the Kirstenhof area. They soon spotted the vehicle heading in the direction of Sunrise Circle, and pulled over the driver.The officers found a number of items in the vehicle, including a remote jamming device, false licence plates, implements used to break into cars and the items that had been reported stolen in the remote jamming incident. Four suspects aged between 25 and 33 were arrested for possession of stolen property, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of car breaking implements, fraud, remote jamming, and theft out of motor vehicle. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/remote%20jamming%20arrests.jpg" alt="" style="width:800px;" /></figure> It also transpired that they are wanted in connection with crimes committed elsewhere, including Gqeberha.On the same day, officers received information about a vehicle driving around the Wynberg area that matched the description of a car that had been stolen in Delft in December. They found the vehicle in Constantia, and a check on the registration and VIN confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen. The driver was arrested for possession of a stolen motor vehicle as well as fraud (he was found in possession of two fraudulent licence documents) and detained at Diep River SAPS.'These incidents remind us that, while a lot of emphasis is on road safety, and curbing drunk and reckless driving, our traffic officers do so much more. I'm particularly pleased with the arrest of the remote jamming suspects. It appears that they have been engaging in criminal acts in at least one other province. I hope that the investigators are able to piece together all of their alleged misdeeds and that they are appropriately punished. 'Unfortunately, criminals have stepped up their game and remote jamming is far more commonplace than we would like. I want to appeal to motorists and their passengers to double check that their doors and boot are locked to minimise the risk of falling victim to this type of crime,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
