Redhill beneficiaries celebrate Dido Valley key hand over Redhill beneficiaries celebrate Dido Valley key hand over
Redhill informal settlement beneficiaries and other dignitaries today, 17 May 2023, celebrated the first key hand over at the City’s Dido Valley housing development in the Simon’s Town area. The R170 million project is made up of 600 housing opportunities; of which 500 are subsidised Breaking New Ground (BNG) houses earmarked for the Redhill beneficiaries and 100 are houses for the Luyolo land claimants

Today, 17 May 2023, the City's Acting Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Alderman James Vos, and officials in the Human Settlements Directorate handed over the keys to 10 Dido Valley beneficiaries. This group is the first to move into the flagship subsidised housing and restitution project.

'This housing project not only empowers beneficiaries as first-time homeowners, but it also brings together a severed community. This is a tangible example of redress and restitution in action and of our commitment to building a better future for those who bore the brunt of the apartheid policies. This well located project also enables and unlocks affordable housing in this area.

'Work on site is progressing well and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, if all goes according to plan. Thank you to our communities, City teams and project steering committees for the hard work and dedication to move this complex project forward,' said Alderman Vos.

The majority of the beneficiaries for the BNG component of the project come from the Redhill informal settlement, which is located between Simon's Town and Scarborough and their allocation is in line with housing allocation policies. The Luyolo land claimant beneficiaries were forcibly removed from Simon's Town in the mid-1960s under the apartheid Group Areas Act. These beneficiaries were moved to Gugulethu. The project has a combined support organisation representing the two groups of beneficiaries from Redhill and Luyolo respectively. The first group of Luyolo land claimants viewed their units and attended a Housing Consumer Education (HCE) session on 22 April and will receive their units within the next few weeks.

End

2023-05-16T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#a6932d16-edf6-4e7f-845d-0944046ffad5;L0|#0a6932d16-edf6-4e7f-845d-0944046ffad5|Dido Valley;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#4f905c08-072a-43d2-8461-0505ce3c90ba;L0|#04f905c08-072a-43d2-8461-0505ce3c90ba|beneficiary;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#02d14be4-3d23-41a6-b14a-7c4732a9aa7d;L0|#002d14be4-3d23-41a6-b14a-7c4732a9aa7d|BNG;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb10
