Parking marshals could return by end November

05 September 2021

The City of Cape Town wants to advise business owners, commuters, and residents that the management of on-street parking bays in the Cape Town central business district, Sea Point, Claremont, Newlands and Bellville should commence by November 2021, if all goes as planned.

Covid-19 and the associated lockdowns have had a significant impact on parking management operations in the Cape Town business districts.

The City relies on specialist contractors for these services. Given the economic climate there was little interest from the private sector when requests for quotations were advertised in March 2021and again in a second round in May 2021. The lack of interest caused some delays.

However, the Transport Directorate can report that the process is progressing well to procure a new kerbside parking management contract in the Cape Town CBD, Sea Point, Claremont, Newlands and Bellville.

If all goes as planned, the new contractor should be appointed by the end of September 2021. Given the complexities associated with the management of parking bays the contractor will need time to procure the equipment, and appoint and train personnel.

As such, the management of parking in these areas may only proceed by the end of November 2021. If there are no unforeseen challenges or delays parking marshals should be on duty in these areas before the festive season starts.

‘I can assure residents and businesses that the Transport Directorate is doing all it can to ensure management commences as a matter of urgency. We are well aware that clients need parking bays to visit businesses in these areas. Still, the City needs to follow due process in the awarding of contracts and this takes time. I want to thank all upfront for their patience and continued understanding while we are working on getting this matter concluded,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Councillor Rob Quintas.
