The City would like to set the record straight on questions around the route for the 2026 event. Read more below:

|
The City of Cape Town is not the custodian nor the organiser of the Tweede Nuwe Jaar or the Cape Town Street Parade event as it is currently known.

Therefore, the City cannot and does not decide on the route of the road march.

That decision resides with the minstrel fraternity and currently the organisation responsible for the event logistics is the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association.

As a regulator of events hosted in Cape Town, the City's Events Permit Office can only evaluate the application and ensures that plans submitted by event organisers are compliant with the requirements of the Events By-Law as well as those of the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act.

The KKKA approached the City early in 2025 with the intention of gaining the municipality's support for its proposal to take the road march to Green Point via Somerset Road.

After considering the reasons behind the decision and the route's feasibility, the City has lent its support to the move on condition that the organisation submits plans for the proper management of the event route.

The KKKA has since applied for the road march to go through the fanwalk down Somerset Road and into DHL Stadium. That application along with safety and logistical plans are in the final stages of scrutiny before a permit is issued.

During this process, the permit office facilitates engagement between the event organiser and the various City Departments who ensure that all the plans required for a safe and compliant event are met.

The permit office also facilitates engagement between the event organiser, resident organisations in affected wards and the councillors representing those areas.

The permit review process is still under way, and a decision will be made in the coming week once all the plans have been finalised.

Furthermore, the court application brought against the City on 27 December 2025 does not relate to the Tweede Nuwe Jaar event.

Additionally, it pertains to a different minstrel grouping, namely the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association, and is scheduled to be heard in court on Monday, 29 December 2025.

| 2025-12-27T22:00:00Z | GP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d | | | | | GP0|#efda320e-feae-441f-95bd-e91db262c97f;L0|#0efda320e-feae-441f-95bd-e91db262c97f|Events Permitting Process;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#ab7f0d36-c340-4d42-a0da-037b9c4f99e7;L0|#0ab7f0d36-c340-4d42-a0da-037b9c4f99e7|Tweede Nuwe Jaar;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GPP|#f401091e-90e0-4973-be6f-46625ec8597d;GP0|#de669d0f-b668-4ae7-92bb-b393edd91860;L0|#0de669d0f-b668-4ae7-92bb-b393edd91860|cape town stadium;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb | 1 | | | | | | | | | | | 0 |
