City enforcement agencies continue to clamp down on drunk drivers
'The number of drivers who take to the roads while intoxicated remains a huge concern for the City's enforcement agencies. These are the drivers who, with their judgement impaired, are later involved in accidents or other illegal activities. Of those arrested, more than 100 were for drunk driving.

'A case in point is a driver who was arrested at an illegal street racing event in Bellville South with a blood alcohol level five times the legal limit. In his inebriated state he was going to engage in an illegal event where he put his own life and that of other drivers and spectators in danger,' said the City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

At the same drag-racing operation, a second driver was arrested for driving under the influence while 117 fines were issued for various other offences and 14 vehicles were suspended for illegal modifications.

Other operations saw 96 taxis and 49 sedan taxis taken off the road for being unroadworthy.

Metro Police successes for the weekend include the arrest of 26 motorists for driving under the influence and 39 suspects on various charges varying from the Illegal possession of drugs, domestic violence and the unlawful possession of ammunition.

Officers also issued 1544 fines for various by-law and traffic contraventions.

The four-footed Metro police officers also racked up a number of successes.

On Saturday, January 25, Metro police officers and K9 Savage followed up on information about drugs hidden close to New Road in Macassar.

They searched the area and found 28 dagga stoppe,13 Mandrax halves, and 9 Tik bankies abandoned at different spots. In Parow, the K9 unit was busy with enforcement when they attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle. The driver sped off with members in pursuit. When they stopped the vehicle and approached the driver leaned over to the front passenger window and threw objects out the window.

Officers found a packet of Tik and took the driver to his home, which officers noticed was a residence where they had made a recent drug arrest. Upon searching the premises, they found a bankie dagga, a bankie tik, five cellphones, two scales, a weapon and more R15 673 in cash. He was arrested for the possession of drugs, defeating the ends of justice, the possession of a dangerous weapon and the possession of suspected stolen property.

On Sunday, January 26, during crime prevention patrols in the Goodwood, Eerste Rivier and Mitchells Plain areas, Metro Police officers arrested six suspects for the possession of dangerous weapons and the possession of an imitation firearm and drugs.

The Tactical Response and the Gang and Drug Task Teams high visibility patrols, coupled with stop searches and the gathering of vital information, in all gang hot spot areas.

Five suspects between 21 – 35 years of age were arrested and officers confiscated the following:

24 heroin straws

3 x 38 mm Live Rounds of Ammunition

One knife

1 x packet of Tik and half Mandrax tablet

1 unit heroin and R80 cash

'Drivers are implored on a near-daily basis to not get behind the wheel when inebriated, yet these pleas fall on deaf ears. Our officers spend a lot of time taking these drivers off the road and it takes them away from other operations. With so many other crimes plaguing our communities, it is selfish to put yourself and others at risk.

'We will continue to ramp up efforts to keep roads and communities safe. Those who continue to put other road users at risk by driving under the influence or flouting traffic laws, will be arrested,' added Alderman Smith.

End
2020-01-26T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#7addfbd5-ca70-49b8-aaa7-c93e8bbd07d6;L0|#07addfbd5-ca70-49b8-aaa7-c93e8bbd07d6|drunk driving;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#5dfd7a7b-84c9-4a6d-ab55-ff5d5f7e710b;L0|#05dfd7a7b-84c9-4a6d-ab55-ff5d5f7e710b|by-law enforcement;GP0|#2459c32a-606e-4c57-95eb-454a182b5eba;L0|#02459c32a-606e-4c57-95eb-454a182b5eba|vehicle impoundment;GP0|#78273557-84e5-4b4e-8960-1153e6941255;L0|#078273557-84e5-4b4e-8960-1153e6941255|Metro police1
