Call on public to participate in rethinking Harrington Square and surroundsCall on public to participate in rethinking Harrington Square and surrounds
The City of Cape Town is calling on residents, stakeholders, and interested and affected parties to get involved in the renewal and reshaping of Harrington Square, one of the key public spaces on the eastern side of the City Bowl. A number of workshops and public meetings are planned, the first of which is taking place on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.

Harrington Square is located on the eastern side of the City Bowl on the border with District Six, and fronts to Caledon, Canterbury and Harrington streets.

The renewal of Harrington Square and surrounds is one of the City’s key priorities, with the intention to make this space multi-functional, more accessible, safer, and inviting to the public while optimising the parking area for clients visiting the local businesses. Included in the draft concept design for this project is the proposal for traffic calming around the square to improve pedestrian safety.

The project builds on the District Six Public Realm Study of 2022, and the approved local spatial development frameworks for District Six and the Central Business District (approved in 2025), all of which guide long-term spatial planning.

‘Harrington Square and the immediate surrounding area have immense potential as civic spaces. We want to reimagine these assets and see how they can be used to uplift the area, lead urban regeneration, and also strengthen the connections between the surrounding neighbourhoods. We are now inviting the public, the local communities, and stakeholders such as the local business owners, to get involved as we refine the concept design for this project. Help us shape the vision for this space and let us see how we can combine the current uses with future uses to better integrate the community and promote inclusivity. Your input and insights are valuable, and we are eager to work with you,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

Several public meetings and workshops are planned for the months ahead, with the introductory meeting taking place as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 21 April 2026
Time: 16:00 to 18:00
Venue: Subcouncil 16 Council Chamber; 44 Wale Street, Cape Town

Kindly register for this meeting: send a WhatsApp to 060 523 4767; phone 021 834 1600; send an email to harringtonsquare@infinity.capetown ; or go to https://www.infinity.capetown/harringtonsquare

Attendees will receive more information about the draft concept, project vision and objectives, planning process and implementation, and learn about upcoming workshops and participation opportunities. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

End

2026-04-08T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#0ab901dc-08fc-4328-86e9-d67d3a0317b4;L0|#00ab901dc-08fc-4328-86e9-d67d3a0317b4|spacial planning and land use management;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#df7359f0-0d0f-46e0-b90f-d487358df9bb;L0|#0df7359f0-0d0f-46e0-b90f-d487358df9bb|district six;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#46cd6f1c-873b-40f4-9f8a-883fa56784e5;L0|#046cd6f1c-873b-40f4-9f8a-883fa56784e5|infrastructural upgrades;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GPP|#fa689e9d-c6a8-4381-8a1c-f55592d5d2a410
