A weekend of sports: Logistics for Stormers-Sharks & SA20 Final

With two big events coming up this weekend, the City explains the logistical arrangements.

The DHL Stormers will host the Sharks at DHL Stadium on Saturday, 24 January 2026 in round 10 of the United Rugby Championship.More than 40 000 spectators are expected at the game, which is part of the Stormers’ Summer Series at DHL Stadium. ‘We encourage spectators to arrive early to avoid the traffic rush. There's limited parking in the Green Point precinct, so park in the CBD instead and take the free MyCiTi shuttle or the Fan Walk to get to the stadium. Our City services will be working with the event organiser to manage traffic and public safety,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.Gates will open at 16:30, with the match scheduled for a 19:30 kick-off. A free MyCiTi shuttle service is available to ticket holders from 16:00, departing from the Civic Centre, Thibault Square and the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).The last bus will depart the stadium and the Green Point Precinct at 23:30. At the CTICC, the shuttle will operate from the City Sightseeing bus stop near Entrance 3 on Walter Sisulu Avenue. Approximately 1 000 parking bays are available at the CTICC at a cost. Parking opens at 15:30, and online bookings are available to secure a spot. For those driving into the city centre, the City will open its parking areas at the Civic Centre for ticket holders from 15:30. The parking bays, accessible from Hertzog Boulevard incoming and on Civic Road, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The parking will close at midnight. Paid parking is also available at Parkalot on Jack Craig Street and at Harbour Arch on Harbour Arch Boulevard. Off-street parking, free from 13:00 on Saturdays, is also available in the CBD.Residents and motorists are advised that Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Stephan Way, Vlei Road and Granger Bay Boulevard will be impacted from 06:00 until after the game. SA20 Final The City is partnering with the SA20 League to host the final of South Africa's premier T20 league at Newlands Cricket Ground on Sunday, 25 January 2026.Some of the country and the world's top cricket players have lit up the summer of cricket for season four of South Africa's premier T20 league. The sold-out final gets under way at 15:30. Gates open at 12:30. General parking is available at Groote Schuur Primary on Campground Road and Groote Schuur High School on Palmyra Road. Metrorail trains will be operating to Newlands Station on Sunday and will take spectators towards Cape Town and Fish Hoek post-game. A return ticket will cost R20. This is Cape Town… in New York, London and Europe

This Is Cape Town, the City’s biggest and boldest tourism initiative to date, is landing in New York, London and several European cities this month.

The campaign, launched late last year by the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, Alderman James Vos, is being rolled out over several months across six continents and 55 cities worldwide, and is designed to drive international interest and bookings that support Cape Town’s tourism industry and the jobs it sustains.‘The focus of This Is Cape Town is to ensure that global attention translates into real travel demand, real spend in our local economy and real job opportunities for Capetonians,’ said Alderman Vos. <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"><img class="responsive" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Images%202/London%20cab_GHL%20and%20JV.jpg" alt="" /></figure>The strategy is being activated across a range of high-visibility platforms and locations, including digital billboards and public transport advertising in key precincts across the target cities.A distinctive feature of the campaign is the use of moving billboards in the US and UK. In New York, digital screens are mounted on iconic yellow taxis, while in London, traditional black cabs are wrapped in This Is Cape Town branding. These London cabs also feature Virgin Atlantic advertising inside, including a QR code linking directly to flight bookings.Further marketing has gone live on Connected TV platforms in Italy, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany.‘Cape Town has seen a notable increase in global air connectivity, supported by sustained and targeted place marketing campaigns, such as This Is Cape Town. ‘When United Airlines launched direct flights from Newark Liberty International Airport to Cape Town in 2019, around 3 500 passenger seats were available that year. Between 2019 and 2025, United Airlines will have operated 1 324 flights, delivering a cumulative 337 374 passenger seats on the route. By 2025 alone, annual seat capacity increased to 85 500 seats, with a projected 91 749 seats in 2026,’ said Alderman Vos.Increased demand led United Airlines to introduce a direct Washington D.C. to Cape Town flight, further strengthening connectivity between the US and Cape Town. Growth has also been recorded in the UK market. ‘Virgin Atlantic increased London–Cape Town services from three flights per week in December 2021 to seven per week during the current peak period. In total, Cape Town currently enjoys 28 direct flights per week between London and Cape Town, serviced by British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Norse Atlantic Airways,’ said Alderman Vos.The current global rollout builds on strong digital performance in São Paulo and African cities, including Lusaka and Nairobi, where the campaign reached more than 17 million people on META platforms in just one month.‘Beyond creating awareness, tourism contributed R27,5 billion to Cape Town’s economy in 2024 and supported more than 106 000 jobs. Our focus is on growing those numbers through smart, high-impact and cost-effective campaigns that are backed by conversion in key source markets,’ said Alderman Vos.In the coming months, This Is Cape Town is set to go live in additional markets including China, India, the United Arab Emirates and Australia. Road maintenance on Hindle Road in Brentwood Park

Roadworks along Hindle Road from Westbank Main Road to the bridge over the Kuils River near Brentwood Park.

‘The roadworks primarily involve upgrading the gravel shoulders and maintenance beneath the bridge over the Kuils River. Towards the end of February, a brief section of the road, which is approximately 20 meters, will be temporarily reduced to half-widths for resurfacing work to improve the riding surface and keep Cape Town moving. I would like to thank residents and road users for their patience and understanding during the course of these roadworks,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas. Identikidz growth points to parental trust

The programme, implemented by the City’s Community Services and Health Directorate, is aimed at keeping young children safe on beaches.

The Identikidz Programme, was first introduced in 2016 and is coordinated by the Community, Arts and Culture Development Department, registered 129 377 children at participating beaches this holiday season, compared to just more than 124 500 the previous season.The annual child safety intervention kicked off on 15 December 2025 and drew to a close on Sunday, 18 January 2026. Identikidz gives caregivers the option to register their children for added peace of mind while enjoying their beach days. It is implemented at 15 of Cape Town’s busiest beaches over the festive season, as well as Maiden’s Cove on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.For its last outing this past weekend, 53 officials and 159 Expanded Public Works Programme staff members registered 4 794 children. The busiest beaches were Strand (831), Muizenberg (674) and Strandfontein (594), with no children lost.For the season there were 227 reunions, while five children were handed over to the Department of Social Development (DSD) as their caregivers were not located by end of the beach day, compared to 256 reunions and 11 handovers to DSD last year.The programme has also grown with 133 730 tagged during 2023/2024 (the first full season after lockdown) and 124 582 during the 2024/2025 season.‘Identikidz has been a resounding success in keeping our younger bathers safe. Our beaches were busy and the programme delivered in providing that extra layer of protection. To the staff who were at their posts day in and day out, I extend my sincere appreciation for your efforts. Thank you also to the thousands of parents who trusted the programme to participate and register their children. ‘With more hot days to come, we remind parents and caregivers to keep an eye on younger children, especially over weekends when you’re visiting the beach or pools.
