Weekly arrests increase by 40%

The City’s enforcement agencies made 338 arrests this past week, up from 241 the week before.

In the most recent confiscation on Sunday, 11 January, Freeway Management System camera operators alerted Metro Police officers to a suspected firearm being hidden behind an informal structure in District Six.Officers responded and conducted a search, which came up empty. With the assistance of a SAPS K9, officers recovered .38 special revolver and four rounds of live ammunition underneath the structure. They took six suspects into custody.On Saturday, LEAP officers recovered two weapons in Hanover Park.Officers responded to a shooting incident at 08:32 and during their search of the area, discovered a 9mm pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition that had been discarded in a wheelie bin. Later that same day, officers responded to shots fired at 19:55 and found a 41-year-old man in possession of a revolver and live rounds. ‘It’s a new year, but we continue to face many of the same challenges around gun violence and the proliferation of illegal firearms in our city. Every weapon confiscated is potentially a crime, or several crimes prevented and lives saved, and our staff will continue removing firearms from our streets. But the same question remains – when will we see concrete steps in identifying and shutting down the illegal firearm supply lines that contribute to the ongoing terror in so many of our communities?’, said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.In general enforcement efforts, Metro Police officers made 97 arrests, including 51 for the possession of drugs. They also issued 2 881 traffic and by-law fines. Law Enforcement Officers made 208 arrests and issued 10 786 notices. On the roads, Traffic Officers recorded 35 954 offences, impounded 105 public transport vehicles and executed 1 138 warrants of arrest.Officers made 33 arrests, of which 23 were for driving under the influence of alcohol, four for reckless and negligent driving and six for various other offences.The Public Emergency Communication Centre received 1 562 calls for assistance this past weekend. This included 529 calls for medical assistance, 66 cases of assault, 38 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents, 207 noise complaints and 38 reports of domestic violence.The public is reminded to please report emergencies or any suspicious and/or criminal activities to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700, and to provide detailed information such as the time, exact address and a short description. Road rehabilitation works in Stikland Bellville

Road rehabilitation works along La Belle Road between Strand Road and Willow Street in Stikland, Bellville.

‘The City is starting the year with much-needed road rehabilitation works in Stikland. The affected road is currently in a poor condition and requires comprehensive upgrades. I would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience over the next six months while construction is under way. These improvements form part of ongoing efforts to keep Cape Town moving. Once completed, the project will deliver a safer, more reliable road, improved stormwater infrastructure and upgraded sidewalks,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas. The roadworks entail the:<ul><li>Rehabilitation of the existing pavement sub-base, base layer and wearing course.</li><li>Repairs to sidewalks by placing new surfacing where required.</li><li>Realignment and replacement of channels and kerbs where required.</li><li>Reinstatement of all road markings removed during the process.</li></ul>Congestion can be expected therefore road users are urged to use alternative routes while work is under way. City committed to upgrading Dunoon Site 5 following fire

The City of Cape Town is ready to proceed with the urgent reblocking of Dunoon’s Site 5 informal settlements following a devastating fire on Friday, 9 January 2026. Contractors are being prevented from carrying out this work by residents. We understand the mistrust which has emerged because of past delays and unfulfilled commitments by the National Department of Human Settlements.Video: <a href="https://bit.ly/49icugt">https://bit.ly/49icugt</a> We acknowledge the distress experienced by residents and understand the mistrust which has emerged because of past delays and unfulfilled commitments by the National Department of Human Settlements. Some residents have already started rebuilding with salvaged materials rather than wait for formal assistance.The City has made R12 million available for the site to be reblocked and have contractors on standby, ready to begin work immediately. Key City services are on-site and are ready to go. The City notes the rejection by the affected community for that reblocking intervention. It is important to place on record that the City is ready to respond. The necessary budget has been identified, contractors are on standby and essential services are on site and ready to begin work immediately.The City’s ability to act is slowed by the absence of the directive required to enable an emergency housing response from the Minister of Human Settlements. This policy gap is creating delays at a time when residents urgently need assistance.City officials have been instructed to step aside temporarily to avoid further conflict. We are not withdrawing from the area. We are ready to work with residents, community leadership and other spheres of government to find a way forward, which restores safe and dignified housing as quickly as possible.We continue to call on national government to provide the necessary policy clarity to enable emergency interventions. Our residents deserve a response which matches the urgency of this disaster.
