Walking and cycling routes
Our accessible city

Our fast-developing ‘non-motorised transport’ (NMT) routes can be found along streets, major roads and greenbelts in the central city and Khayelitsha, and between the CBD and Table View. We have also developed separate, high-quality cycling paths alongside the new MyCiTi bus route, along the Klipfontein Corridor (which includes the Liesbeek Parkway).

The NMT routes are placed around our public transport networks for easy access and connections to our buses and trains. On busier roads, the lanes are wider and painted on the roadway, and along greenbelts or in less busy areas, the lanes are narrower and sometimes intended for both cyclists and pedestrians.

Did you know?

An opportunity city: Cape Town is one of the few cities in South Africa with a ‘bicycle master plan’. The City has developed 435 kilometres of cycleway and a new intervention is to colourise cycleways green in order to clearly indicate cycleways as well as the presence of cyclists to motorised transport.

Cape Town is one of the easiest cities in South Africa to cycle and walk. The city is bicycle and pedestrian friendly with a network of clearly marked bicycle lanes and walkways. In the centre of town, there are many audible traffic signals that help the visually impaired cross streets, as well as tactile paving to guide those with visual impairments. More audible signals will be installed as time goes on.

The city has a Universal Access Policy which guides the design of the transport systems.

Get ‘actively mobile’

If you can’t walk or cycle seven days a week, start small.
