Request an environmental health inspection

Certain businesses are legally required to meet a number of environmental health compliances, including food safety and hygiene requirements. Find out where these compliances are required by law and how to request an environmental compliance inspection.

Business compliance in Cape Town

You will need to meet specific environmental health compliances if you plan on conducting any of the following business in Cape Town.

1. Health and entertainment businesses that:

  • provide turkish baths, saunas and other types of baths;
  • provide massage and/or infrared treatment;
  • make the services of an escort available;
  • keep three or more mechanical, electronic or electrical devices (coin operated gaming appliances);
  • keep three or more snooker or billiard tables;
  • keep or conduct a night-club or discotheque;
  • keep or conduct a cinema or theatre; or
  • operate an adult premises in terms of section 24 of the films and publications act, 1996.

2. Businesses that manufacture, prepare, store, transport or sell any food item intended for human consumption.

3. Childcare facilities, including a crèche, ECD centre or day-mother service, or care centres for the aged.

4. Funeral undertakers premises.

5. Kennels or catteries or premises keeping more animals than legislation permits.

How to request an inspection

If you would like to conduct an environmental health inspection on your business property, please contact the Environmental Health Department and arrange an inspection with the health officials in your area

Please ensure you include in your request:

  • the exact location of the premises requiring inspection, including erf number;
  • if possible, a list of compliances already met; and
  • a list of times when the inspection could take place.

Once your premises has been inspected, you will either be compliant or be served with a notice of the requirements and approvals needed to become compliant, which you will be required to action.
