Register as an accredited waste services provider<h2 class="sectHeading">Accreditation process</h2><p>Our <a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/Bylaws%20and%20policies/Integrated%20Waste%20Management%20By-law%202009.pdf">Integrated Waste Management By-law, 2009</a>, gives us the power to regulate, control and monitor the generation, management and disposal of solid waste in Cape Town. This includes the cleaning, separation, storage, collection, processing, treatment, recycling, re-use, and disposal of waste as well as the prevention of littering and illegal dumping.</p><p>Accreditation is necessary for everyone providing a waste management service and certain waste generators in Cape Town. Apart from the need to be legally compliant, there are also other benefits, such as: work opportunities with government and helping to protect the environment by diverting waste from landfills.</p><div class="notification with-heading dark-copy pink bg-light-grey"><div class="graphic with-border"> <i class="info note">​​​</i> </div><div class="desc"><h4>covid-19 notice to waste service providers</h4><p>The disposal of trade or business waste requires <a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/Forms%2c%20notices%2c%20tariffs%20and%20lists/SWM%20accreditation%20notice.pdf" target="_blank">accreditation as a waste service provider</a>. Ensure that you are registered and comply with the conditions set out in the City's Integrated Waste Management By-law.</p></div></div><h2 class="sectHeading">How to register</h2><p>Follow the steps below to register online:</p><p> <strong>Step 1: </strong><a href="https://web1.capetown.gov.za/web1/swma/" target="_blank">Register on the Solid Waste accreditation site</a>.</p><p> <strong>Step 2: </strong>To avoid unnecessary delays, download and consult <a href="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/documentcentre/Documents/Procedures%2c%20guidelines%20and%20regulations/SWM_Waste_Service_Provider_Online_Accreditation_User%20Guide.pdf" target="_blank"> the checklist in the Accreditation User Guide</a> to ensure you include all the necessary supporting documentation when you submit your application. Make sure that all documentation is current and accurate.<br></p><div class="lrg-icon-content bordered"><div class="lrg-icon lrg-check"><p> <b>You may also need:</b></p><ul><li>certified licences for the management of waste treatment facilities</li><li>certified licences for waste transport activities</li><li>a certified scrap metal dealer certificate of registration from <a href="https://www.saps.gov.za/" target="_blank">SAPS<i class="icon link-external"></i></a></li><li>a certified asbestos registration certificate with <a href="http://www.labour.gov.za/" target="_blank">Department of Labour<i class="icon link-external"></i></a></li><li>hazardous waste to be registered with the <a href="https://www.westerncape.gov.za/eadp/" target="_blank">Department of Environmental Affairs and Planning (DEADP)<i class="icon link-external"></i></a> and to provide a Waste Information Registration (WIR) number for registration</li><li>proof of disposal</li><li>waste statistics per waste type</li><li>any other information that may be required to assess your application</li></ul></div></div>​​​​​​ <p>Along with the necessary supporting documents, you must submit an <a href="https://www.capetown.gov.za/work%20and%20business/commercial-utility-services/commercial-solid-waste-services/integrated-waste-management-plans" target="_blank">integrated waste management plan</a> detailing how you will conduct your business. </p><p> <strong>Step 3:</strong> Submit all required documents on the <a href="https://web1.capetown.gov.za/web1/swma/" target="_blank">Solid Waste accreditation site</a>.</p><p>If you have any registration queries, please email<strong style="font-size:1em;"> </strong><a href="mailto:waste.accreditation@capetown.gov.za" style="font-family:"helvetica neue", helvetica, arial, "lucida grande", sans-serif;font-size:1em;"><em>waste.accreditation@capetown.gov.za</em></a>.</p><h2 class="sectHeading">Approval process</h2><h4>How long does the accreditation process take?</h4><p>From start to finish the process can take three to four months.</p><p>Once your application form and supporting documents have been submitted, the following steps will be taken:<span><br></span></p><table><thead><tr><th>Step</th><th style="width:387px;">Business process</th><th style="width:193px;">Time period</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>1</td><td style="width:387px;">Receipt and notification.
